Project Overview

Bobby Bakehouse is the community heart of Stockland’s recent mixed use residential development, The Gables at Box Hill, North Western Sydney. It brings community activation to the forefront of the Gables; delivering a quality experience at the core of what will ultimately be a thriving community hub. Showcasing the creative repurposing and reinterpretation of recycled elements the venue offers a unique series of places, sequences, and spaces for locals and visitors to enjoy.

The successful delivery of the Bobby Bakehouse is the product of creative collaboration between PDS, Stockland, The Hills Shire Council, the proprietor of Bobby Bakehouse and the project’s consultant team. As Landscape Architects for the project, PDS had a three-fold task; to ensure the final design reflected Bobby Bakehouse’s positioning as a central element of the planned community and retail precinct; to effectively communicate Stockland’s commitment to sustainability and finally to deliver a finished design which complimented the uniquely eccentric, rustic aesthetic associated with the Bobby Bakehouse brand.

To date, the food precinct has repurposed over 2,000 metres of corrugated iron and steel. Close to 900 square metres of basket weave recycled bricks have been used and the fencing was built using locally sourced old timber logs. Three decommissioned, 40ft shipping containers were sourced by PDS in Lismore with cladding on the containers made from old timber floorboards damaged by the floods in Lismore in 2021-2022. The containers have been refurbished to act as cold room/retail storage, toilet facilities and general storage. Complimenting the structural elements, PDS designed a seasonal planting palette, hardy in nature to withstand the potential damage common in areas of high footfall.
