Case study: Ivanhoe Hotel Courtyard

Our conceptual thinking and design inspiration came from the Architects and client wanting to reinforce the hotels close proximity to South Steyne 'Manly Beach'.

Early original sketches indicate our desire to interpret beach inspired forms. Materials that could be translated effectively into the built form are experienced daily by patrons. The elegant curves of Shelley Beach, the strong striped patterns of beach towels on the sand all guided our design thinking. We considered the ceiling of the courtyard as an important element and initially recommended “lantern” style lighting, the Architects took this a step further and used crayfish (lobster) pots.
